Izzy is 13! Don’t be scared…

Izzy

My daughter Isabelle is turning 13 today. Sometimes I feel disembodied. Like life is just happening and I’m passively observing. Never is this intuition more frightening than when sparked by a child’s growth. But, with fear comes the Lord’s comfort.

Today I am comforted because my daughter loves Jesus and brownies and her little sister. She hasn’t grown ahead of herself and her head isn’t too swollen yet. People say that teenagers are a challenge and God and my mother know I was one, so I believe them. But, if Izzy stays Izzy then I think we’ll be alright. She listens when I talk, but I’m more thankful that she trusts her mom and me enough to let us listen when she needs to talk.

As the Jimmy Cliff song says, there are “Many Rivers to Cross” in Izzy’s journey to becoming a woman, and I pray that as she crosses them, she keeps her eyes fixed on Jesus. I know then, that even if I’m simply watching her grow in front of me, she’ll grow straight and true and happy.

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
May your song always be sung
May you stay forever young

I pray that Izzy in her love and humility, faith and kindness pave the way for the rest of the kids in our family. Micah and Christy a 13 year old girl doesn’t get this way on her own. With Jesus in her heart and the guidance from the 2 of you, she is a remarkable teenage girl. I know you must be proud. Happy Birthday Iz. It seems like yesterday you were everybody’s little baby smothered by two enormous families. I love you hunny.
